Onke Mjo, at the LOC Head Office, has said that Volunteers will only get paid on 31 August. She has that “take it or leave it” attitude! Call her at 083 2010 112 or her boss Derek Blancensee at 083 2010 175 – he is in charge of Volunteers nationally! See the detail below:
Today I spoke to the following:
+ Teral Cullen, (083 2010 195) the Cape Town Stadium Venue Manager for the World Cup – she said the “safely guaranteed payment date” is 11 August. She gave me the number for the person dealing with all Volunteer matters in Johannesburg, Onke Mjo. Teral called me back, and told me I should remember that the Head of the LOC Finance was shot at in Johannesburg last week, and that this was probably delaying things, as they have to capture details of 25 000 volunteers! I put it to her that he probably is not doing the admin work on this himself! She also told me that if her boss Derek Blancensee cannot sort out the payment problem, then no one can, as she reports to him!
+ Onke Mjo (083 2010 112) told me that payment would be made on 31 August – she also has a take it or leave it attitude. She told me there are so many volunteers to pay, that’s why they are behind
+ Derek Blancensee (083 2010 175) is Onke’s boss, and also Teral’s, based in Johannesburg – he was in charge of all Volunteer matters, but sounded very laid back to me, in saying he is not head of Finance! I said that as head of Volunteers, he should make it his business to ensure that we are paid. He called me back this afternoon, and told me there are a lot of people to be paid – I said he knew that in April already. They did capture bank details, but many of them were incorrect. Now they want to pay us via the FNB cards, but not all the stadium venues have issued the FNB cards to their volunteers, and the LOC does not want to pay monies into the cards if they do not have a legitimate owner! I asked him how they would trace x number of volunteers without the FNB cards before the new deadline? He could not answer. I suggested that they pay us into our bank accounts, seeing that they have our details. He said that they would incur fees from their bank if they made payments that bounced back! Another “take it or leave it response”!
is this a joke? bcz it aint funny. in fact i wouldn’t be surprised its only in south africa things like these happen. it difinetely leaves a bad taste after a great event.
Dear Mzoliswa
I am more than annoyed, and am taking this further. Today I spoke to the following:

To be honest with you. this is very sad and very unprofessional of these ppl. The attitudes of the ppl involved does not surprise me as this was an isssue at Final draw in 2009. They expect so much of us but they don’t have the decency to pay the monies as agreed. end of world cup. so sad.
you know what? we south africanz will neva prosper…..poverty will always be our middle name…because those who are incharge r criminalz, and believe me ur stomachs will neva be full and those of ur children and those of ur children’s children
Are we going to be paid the interest our money is accruing whilst not being paid? If we are not getting the interest, who is cashing in? Is this another long-fingers tale?
I think this is unacceptable and there will be problems believe you me! But ja Sakhi also told me the 11th. The work is done and now they have a “I don’t care attitude”. They never treat the locals with care. International volunteers are the first concern then come the locals. We all did the same work but treatment was different.
They must “Come out there”.
This is annoying and disgusting. Some of the Soccer City have received their monie for the meals that we all promised about and they were even promised that their applications will be pushed first so that they get their monies in time. This is not fair at all. This Onke person has got a very bad attitude, she thinks that this world will belong to her yet not. I can say she is confused with money that is in front of her forgeting that thats our monies and energy too.
I got an email stating that in Cape Town we will be paid as from today 9 August till 15 August…how true is that? these people are fooling us, they started by giving us meal vouchers(in the airport we had to eat junk food daily) what are they thinking about our time, its like we were working for food and drinks, y did they put money in our contracts and breached it…….mmmmmh..I smell a rat….their attitude was so bad..i can imagine GRAM AND YUSUF(AIRPORT TEAM LEADERS) they treated us like high school kids….I wonder what are they going to do with the money…….all crooks must learn from Selebi
bobo hayi sana u r taking t up 2 thee next level….miss ya lolest
So we are all in the same boat? I volunteered in DBN, till today – no sms on my phone. You know these people have just left a sour taste to this wonderful event. They served us rotten food and match days we got MacDonalds, we never saw the R 120 meal voucher they promised us. I hope all the LOC members of the whole SA can see what they have just started. It was my first time volunteering and my last time. Its sad but true. I dont know when SA is gonna learn how to do things right and properly.
Hey people
Word is, people have been paid in DBN but no smses have been sent through to people, please also check ur cards if they are valid or not.
I have just checked mine, and its invalid card number. So now, im trying to call the LOC members to sort this out for me. What a waste of time
Good luck
